FMB was once again in the news this week with an article in The Guardian newspaper about our Guardians of the Sea initiative!
We were glad to welcome Annika Hammerschlag, a journalist with The Guardian, to Maio last July for an article she was writing about our Guardians of the Sea.
Annika wrote about how the initiative works – “there are 20 Guardians, artisanal fishermen monitoring illegal fishing activity along the coastline of Maio… When a fisherman spots illegal activity, he records the details, which are added to a database and shared with the authorities. They also track wildlife sightings to help the foundation monitor populations of whales, dolphins and turtles.”
The article also noted the problems that fishermen in Maio encounter, such as conflict with semi-industrial fishing boats; illegal fishing methods and the effects of over-fishing.
